Cyveillance, a leading provider of cyber intelligence solutions, has announced the launch of its Social Media Watch service. The service is explicitly designed to meet the needs of risk, compliance, and information security professionals in smaller organizations who need a single tool to identify risks and online threats, meet compliance requirements, and keep abreast of global security trends across industries.

Cyveillance Social Media Watch leverages the same proprietary platform, reporting capabilities, and in-depth analysis that power solutions for Fortune 500 customers, but is scoped to address the budgets, needs, and risks of smaller companies. Service elements include Monitoring, Vetted Alerting, Incident Investigation Reports, and Global Intelligence.

“Effectively monitoring the constantly changing social media landscape has become harder than ever, especially for organizations outside the Fortune 500,” said Eric Olson, Vice President of Product Strategy for Cyveillance. “Smaller organizations have to meet the same compliance requirements as larger ones and need the same intelligence on risks, threats and global security trends, but they’re struggling to keep up. In particular, the recent Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) Guidance has elevated social media risks and compliance as a key issue for regional banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions. By offering a comprehensive, cost-effective solution, we can help these organizations meet the challenges more effectively, and free up their internal resources to address actual risks and threats versus spending their time searching for possible problems.”

And the problems are numerous.  Criminals and threat actors are using social media to create impostor accounts, embarrass companies and business leaders, plan disruptive activities, and post confidential data and documents. Customers can create liabilities with online communications with the company, and employees can post information that may unintentionally violate compliance rules.

“The problem is huge. Almost every organization uses social media, and has employees that do, yet they don’t have any good way to look out for security risks, data leaks, or compliance violations. Unlike Cyveillance Social Media Watch, most of the social media monitoring tools available now are designed for marketing users, not security professionals, and they don’t look at sources such as document sharing and “paste” sites,” Olson added.

Social Media Watch uses automated systems to gather real-time data from the most popular U.S. social media platforms, and other web-based user-generated content sources, using client-specified indicators. This data is then analyzed by human experts to identify five categories of security risks and online threats, including imposter accounts on Twitter, Google +, and YouTube. Rapid notification of potential problems allows organizations to take proactive measures to address them, while in-depth follow-up reports answer the critical “who, what, where, when and how” questions to enable organizations to react appropriately. Global Intelligence reports give organizations visibility into threat trends outside their organization in other industries.
